Pacific Northwest Green Diver Conservation Project

Project Name: Oregon Chapter NAUI Green Diver: STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics), SCUBA, Stewardship, and Service Learning

Project Details:
     Regional Directors: 
  • Rod Shroufe: NAUI Northwest ITC Coordinator; NAUI Next Generation Committee; NAUI Marketing Committee
  • Micah Reese: Dive Safety Officer at the Oregon Zoo, NAUI Diversity Committee

Project Objectives
  • Mentor the next generation of NAUI Divers and Members through scheduled monthly projects that drive interest in marine conservation
  • Recruit and train new NAUI divers by providing pathways for young people in the community 
  • Apply Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) to conservation projects 
  • Establish dive mentors and ocean ambassadors through community supported NAUI Green Diver Conservation Projects
  • Raise $15,000.00 dollars during the first year to support local conservation projects, youth diver conservation programs and build NAUI Green Diver.

Project and Event Descriptions   
  • February-June: Artificial Reef Structures.  Three dimensional modeling Project Leader Kenna Quirke: Kenna will be 3D modeling reef structure as part of her engineering class.  Following model development she will be casting the reef structures using forms donated by The Reefball Foundation.  She will be working with AP Environmental Science students to create an educational exhibit slated to be displayed at the Oregon Zoo as part of a rotating NAUI Green Diver Educational Exhibit.
  • March: Reef Survey: Event Leader Rod Shroufe, certified divers will complete a fish survey at a dive site in Hoodsport, Washington and submit data to Reef.Org
  • April:  Zoo Talk Community Meet-up* Event Leader Micah Reese: Micah will lead a virtual lecture live at the zoo on nearshore pacific reef ecology and the role the Oregon Zoo Plays in educating the public about marine resource conversation. The NAUI Volunteer divers/program will be highlighted during the presentation and a question and answer opportunity at the end of the presentation will address career pathways in diving with Micah, the NAUI Dive Safety Officer at the Oregon Zoo.
  • September: Clackamas River Clean Up** Event Leaders Maggie Stevenson and Jen Bennett:  This is our annual river clean up that we partner with Clackamas County Water and Environment Services to pull trash from the river. Divers and Snorkelers from the Portland Metro Area are invited to pull trash from the river.  We will do a Green Diver fundraiser where people will have the opportunity to donate a set amount or an amount based on pounds of trash removed from the river.  Proceeds will be banked to be allocated toward upcoming projects and events.
  • October: Try Snorkeling and SCUBA events open for all Youth Green Diver participants not currently divers.  This will be a 3 hour session where participants will get an hour of water time working with certified NAUI dive mentors.  Number of attendees will be regulated based on state policy on assembly due to Covid.
  • October-December: Two and three dimensional fish art: All art generated by students will be posted in a silent auction to raise money for the Green Diver program’s future events.  All art generated by students will be cycled through a Green Diver Exhibit at the Oregon Zoo prior to being available for auction. 
    • *Marine Trash Art: Project leader Michelle Colbert, Art Teacher, Fir Ridge Campus David Douglas High School.  Trash for the project will be collected during the Clackamas RIver Clean-up.
    • Habitat sculptures: Project Leader Linda Kieling, Art Teacher, Adrien C. Nelson High School: Sculptures will be student created and upon completion exhibited at the Green Diver education display at the Oregon Zoo.
    • Using art to effectively inspire student and community understanding of marine conservation: Project leader Bonnie Kayser, Clackamas High School, Marine Conservation Awareness through Art.  Art will be student created and upon completion exhibited at the Green Diver education display at the Oregon Zoo.

Project Benefits
  • Initiates a Pacific Northwest Chapter of the NAUI Green Diver capable of being fiscally self-sustaining.
  • Funds will be split 80%-20% between program development and projects in the Pacific Northwest and NAUI Green Diver 
  • Green Diver will be used to expand program offerings for NAUI stores, professional educators and Instructors.
  • Recruit younger customers to NAUI by providing a career- vocational opportunities and pathways.
  • Support and complement existing programs like Force Blue targeting a different audience
  • Events and opportunities like REEF surveys and Aquarium Volunteer Diver Programs will expand local diving opportunities building a bigger market base.
  • Develops awareness of Marine Education upholding NAUI’s pledge: NAUI members and divers are devoted to preservation and conservation of our underwater environment.
  • Supports NAUI’s Coaching and Mentoring Program: currently being developed as part of the ITC expansion process.
  • Recruits school age students to participate as community and Ocean stewards while providing opportunities for them to be trained in watermanship skills, snorkeling and scuba.
  • Funds allocated to support underserved populations in the community with conservation and SCUBA diving opportunities.
  • Effectively incorporates national standards of STEAM creating a natural pathway reinforcing occupational opportunities that incorporate diving, conservation, engineering, mathematics, and art.
