The Dubai Voluntary Diving Team met on February 26, 2016, 25 miles off the shore of Dubai to remove illegally used fishing nets, at a depth of 21 meters. This project is one of forty-four dive and fishing sites actively being searched and cleaned in the region. This effort is part of the 44th annual UAE National Day celebrations.
Fishing nets that have become lost or abandoned by the owner pose a serious threat on marine environments. These "ghost nets" continue to "fish," trapping fish not targeted for harvest and damaging other marine life, including coral reefs.
Thank you to our NAUI Green Divers from the Dubai Voluntary Diving Team for taking action! Check out their video to experience what it takes to remove just one net!
